Product design

HealthNut is a health app that gives its user's customized dietary and fitness advice that is catered around any health condition/s they have. Below here you can see a complete overview of this project from start to finish.

Overview

Overview

Problem

People need dietary and fitness advice that takes their health condition/s into consideration.

Solution

Develop an app that allows the users to input their health condition/s and get customized advice that will either help or not effect them negatively due to their health condition/s.

Outcome

Users will gain confidence in the app and it's features and will frequently return to the app.

I need to empathize with these users to be successful

Meeting the users

User interviews

Before meeting up with the users I went ahead and downloaded the top 2 health apps which were MyFitnessPal and FitBit. I used both of these apps for a week in order to get an idea of the competition as well as to help me put together some questions for the users. I used my network to find a nice mix of people to interview. My pool consisted of people that were different from age, race, and sex. I put together a list of 20 questions that would help me understand the when, where, and why of the users in terms of how they are with their health apps

Key insights

I got a ton of great information from these interviews but the first interview changed my view on the entire project. In order for me to understand the "where" for this project, one of my questions was "where to go to look for dietary and/or fitness advice"?. This user stated that this was always a huge dilemma for him because he has diabetes. Due to this illness, he would have to look for dietary and fitness advice online but then also go back to make sure that it wouldn't have any negative effects on him because of his diabetes.

After getting this great bit of information I added a couple of questions for the rest of the interviewees and came to see that 80% of them had some sort of health condition that required them to do extra work when looking for health advice.

I need to build my users persona and identify their problems and challenges

So what's the problem here?

A person's health has always been a priority for most but now, more than ever, we've seen a huge increase on this subject. This, in part, is due to the Coronavirus and its deadly effects on people with pre existing health conditions.

As of last year, there are around 133 million Americans that suffer from some sort of health condition so because of this, we need to build an app that can help aid these people by giving them dietary and fitness advice that is tailored towards each individual user versus the generic information that most people get.

User personas

Now I can create my user personas after completing the user interviews, compiling data, and creating my affinity map of the users wants, needs, and feeling statements. After reviewing all of the information, two distinct user personas were present.

A/B testing

Do get some quick feed back I did some A/B testing to compare different menu set ups, option organization, and feature locations.

Usability testing

For the usability testing I scheduled 4 in person moderated usability tests. I used screen and audio recording equipment in order to be able to go back and review the tests. I gave each user 5 different tasks to complete and instructed them to say anything that came to mind whilst completing the tasks.

Evaluation

After conducting my usability and A/B testing, I put together a spread sheet to rank the severity of each issue that was identified along with possible resolutions for these problems.

Design process

After identifying issues I then returned back to the design stage and would continue the process of design, test, and evaluate until I had successfully removed all issues and finalize on the design.
